Kenyan President William Ruto and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni on Saturday held a high-level meeting in Kisumu to deliberate on the long-awaited extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) linking the two countries.
The leaders emphasized the strategic importance of extending the SGR from Naivasha through Kisumu and onward to Uganda, describing the project as a critical step toward enhancing regional trade and economic integration within the East African Community (EAC).
President Ruto noted that the railway extension would significantly reduce the cost of transporting goods between Kenya and Uganda, easing pressure on road networks while boosting the movement of cargo from the port of Mombasa to inland destinations.
President Museveni, on his part, reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to the joint infrastructure project, highlighting its potential to transform regional connectivity and unlock new economic opportunities for both nations.
