A fuel shortage is beginning to take hold in parts of Kenya, with several petrol stations running low or completely out of stock despite earlier assurances from the government that supply remains stable.
Motorists in affected areas have reported difficulty accessing petrol and diesel, with some stations introducing rationing measures while others have temporarily shut down due to depleted reserves. The situation appears more pronounced outside major urban centres.
The government had recently moved to calm public concern, maintaining that there was sufficient fuel in the country and that supply chains were intact. However, emerging reports suggest that delays in shipments and distribution challenges may be straining availability.
Kenya’s heavy reliance on imported fuel makes it vulnerable to global supply disruptions, and any delay in deliveries can quickly impact local stocks. Industry observers now warn that if the situation is not addressed promptly, it could escalate into a wider crisis.
There are growing fears that prolonged shortages could disrupt transport, push up the cost of goods, and place additional pressure on an already strained economy.
